Beara Action Group, was set up in 1994 as an umbrella organisation for the Beara Peninsula.  It is a voluntary group consisting of 2 elected representatives from each of the surrounding parishes, Allihies/Garnish/Dursey, Eyeries/Ardgroom, Adrigole/Glengarriff, Bere Island and Castletownbere.  There are also 2 elected representative from each of the main industries, Tourism, Fishing and Farming.  Meetings are held monthly and anyone wishing assistance should contact the representative of their area or industry, who will in turn bring the matter to the meeting for discussion and hopefully a positive outcome.

Representatives for the current year (2003) are:
Farming:  Denis Regan (Chairman) and Micheál Dunne, both from Castletownbere.
Fishing:  Michael O'Neill, Cahermore and Johnny O'Shea, Ardgroom.
Castletownbere: Mossie O'Donoghue & Mary Martin-Sullivan - Joint Treasurers
Adrigole & Tourism:  Margaret O'Sullivan (Asst. Secretary) and Jane O'Sullivan
Eyeries/Ardgroom:  Brian O'Sullivan (Bos) (Vice-Chairman) & Hilary Leahy (Secretary)
Allihies:  Donal Harrington &
Bere Island:  Jackie O'Sullivan (Barule) & Rosemary O'Driscoll.

Beara are to benefit from 2 Family Resource Centres - one in Castletownbere - to cover Allihies, Eyeries and Castletownbere - Rosmackowen - the other in Adrigole which will cover over the Healy Pass to Lauragh and south to Ardgroom.  This project was first mooted by Beara Action Group in 1998 - and the results will be visible by the end of 2003.

Another project that Beara Action Group is actively campaigning for at present is for Beara to be included in an A.D.M. Programme.  There is one operating in South Kerry and also in Bantry.  We hope to get the Bantry area extended to cover the Beara Peninsula.  B.I.D.G. operate the programme in Bantry and are 100% supporting us being included in their next submission which is to start in 2004.  Beara would benefit tremendously, should we get the green light.  We are 1 of only 3 areas in the Clár regions that is not covered by A.D.M.

Beara Action Group also meet with our local councillor Noel Harrington on a regular basis - and the results of such meetings have been very encouraging.  The Spring Clean-Ups that were held in Beara for instance is an example of huge support we are receiving from Noel.  As well as meeting with Noel we also meet with our Local T.D.'s - Deputies Jim O'Keeffe, F.G., Denis O'Donovan & Joe Walsh F.F.

Another issue that is of major importance to Beara is the non-appointment of a permanent doctor since Dr. Brian O'Donovan departed in April 2001.  A public meeting was held on Jan.30th 2003 following numerous representation by us to the Deputies and the Southern Health Board - which was very well supported.  We hope that by the end of the present locum's contract - a permanent and a part-time doctor - 1 of which to be a female - will be in situ.

Beara Action Group, Business Services, is one of the projects that the group started up in 1994 and located in the Square, Castletownbere.  This office is operated by Community Employment Personnel, grant-aided by FÁS and trained in by the committee who also supervise the office on a voluntary basis.  Unfortunately, FAS are cutting numbers of participants throughout Ireland and if this happens - the office opening hours will be severely curtailed.  This is another main issue that we are trying to address for the whole area as voluntary organisations depend so much on this scheme, plus it being a economic and social aspect to the people themselves.

In 1998, again with the assistance of grant-aid from FÁS towards employing a Business Development Officer.  A knitting Co-Operative, namely Cniotail, was established.  Beara Sea Angling and Marine Leisure Club and this Web Site were another two projects in June 2000.  However, the funding for these projects was withdrawn in December 2000.

Beara Action Group, held a competition in 1998, for someone to design a logo for 'Beara'.  The Logo at the top of the page, designed  by Barbara Nolan was picked as a winner.  It shows a Chough, a bird which can be seen frequently in the Beara Peninsula, but more especially at Dursey.
