Fishing Industry

Castletownbere, the 'Capital' of the Beara Peninsula is the largest white fishing port in Ireland and also boasts of having one of the safest natural harbours in the world.  It is a spectacular sight to see the trawlers off-loading their catch at the pier after their trip at sea, or to just watch while the fishermen mend their nets.  

The fish available include Cod, Whiting, Pollock, Haddock, Monkfish, John Dory, Turbot, Brill, Plaice, Sole - Dover & White, Skate/Ray, Dogfish, Bream, Eels, Wrasse, Crayfish, Lobster, Crab, Prawns, Shrimp, King Scallops, Clams, Perriwinkles, Mussels, Oysters, Tuna, Swordfish, Cardinal Fish, Shark, Porkbeagle, Wild and Farmed Atlantic Salmon, Herring and Mackerel.  

Fish is available locally to buy, or enjoy it in the many local bars and restaurants.  For those wishing to buy in bulk, the agents for the trawlers would only be too happy to speak to you.  To enhance the fishing industry, there are also ancilliary companies who supply nets, paints etc., as well as local engineers and I.T. personnel for repair work, when the trawlers need them.
