EYERIES

Eyeries, a brightly painted and beautifully maintaned village overlooking Kenmare Bay, has been a location for a film, a mini series, and advertisments, namely Falling for a Dancer, Purple Taxi, and the Bord Failte advert. It is on the Ring of Beara route, and many of the Beara Way Walking routes.  The whole area is rich in historical and archaelogical sites, legends and lore. 

URHAN / CAHERKEEM / KILCATHERINE

The townland of Urhan situated on the coast road between Allihies and Urhan, sits between Miskin Mountain and Coulagh Bay, and is only two miles away from Claonach, the main location for Deirdre Purcell's 'Falling for a Dancer' which was filmed there in 1997.  At Ballycrovane, the tallest Ogham Stone in the world stands at 17.5 feet.  It has ancient ogham script inscribed on one corner.  In Caherkeem, there is a Mass Rock dating from penal times, when celebrating the Eucharist was illegal and so Mass had to be said in an isolated area.  The Hag of Beara, the petrified remains of an ancient woman of Celtic legend, can be found in Kilcatherine, alongside one of the oldest church sites in Ireland.  This has a subterranean monks' cell, an ancient cross, and, over the doorway, a carving similar to a gargoyle (or cat's head).

ARDGROOM

Ardgroom, again, a beautiful, brightly painted and well maintained village, overlooking Kenmare Bay and on the Ring of Beara route. Nearby, at Derryvegal Lake, freshwater fishing can be enjoyed. In Canfie, there is a Stone Circle dating from 1000BC.  These stone alignments are believed to be ancient calendars. 

Throughout the whole area, there are numerous places of accommodation with top-quality Bed and Breakfasts, Self-Catering houses, and a Hostel.  Plus there is a great selection of places to eat, from pub food to a restaurant.
